MÓNICA MENDES is a digital media artist, designer and assistant professor coordinating the Multimedia Art degree at the University of Lisbon. She is also a researcher at M-ITI - Madeira Interactive Technologies Institute, collaborator at CIEBA – Centro de Investigação e de Estudos em Belas-Artes, and founding member of AZ Labs hackerspace altLab.
Interested in designing for a more sustainable world, Mónica is exploring real-time interactive systems at the intersection of Art, Science and Technology.

MÓNICA MENDES
[Portuguese, b. Angola | Living in Lisbon, Portugal] is an assistant professor and coordinator of the Multimedia Art degree of the University of Lisbon, FBAUL.

She has a PhD in Digital Media [UT Austin-Portugal Program] – specialization in Production of Audiovisual and Interactive Content, Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa - UT Austin/Portugal Program, 2013. Thesis: “ARTiVIS: Arts, Real-Time Video and Interactivity for Sustainability”, Advisors: Nuno Correia and Sílvia Chicó, FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology fellowship.
Masters in Multimedia Educational Communication, Universidade Aberta, 2001. Dissertation: “Educational Video Redesign: Hypermedia Interfaces for Video and Television”, Advisor: Nuno Guimarães.
Degree in Communication Design, Faculdade de Belas-Artes da Universidade de Lisboa, 1995.

As an educator, she has taught Multimedia Project Methodology, Multimedia Project I and II, Digital Media, Introduction to Multimedia, Multimedia Programming, Models, Typography, Design Theory and Practice, Design Project and Scripto Technology. She was an invited lecturer of Interface Design for Mobile Devices workshops and Implied Technologies master courses; she was an Erasmus student in Norwich, and an Erasmus teacher in Berlin and in La Laguna, with the Worshop "Interactive Environments: Introduction to Physical Computing with Arduino".

Additionally, Mónica Mendes developed projects as a designer at Atelier B2 with José Brandão – mainly exhibition design and book design for cultural institutions, as a corporate identity and information design free-lancer, and as an interface design consultant.

She is an integrated researcher at M-ITI – Madeira Interactive Technologies institute, a collaborator at CIEBA – Artistic Studies Reasearch Center, as part of CIEAM on Interactive Environments, and she participated in research projects on augmented environments and mobile storytelling of the IMG – Interactive Multimedia Group. She is a founding member of Lisbon's hackerspace altLab, a collective dedicated to independent research and experimentation in alternative media.
Mónica is also founder of Loev [Live Online Events] the ARTiVIS project, and she has organized events, such as conferences and workshops.

As a digital media artist and researcher, Mónica has participated in diverse conferences, exhibitions and public demonstrations, such as USE(R) in Lisbon, Artech in Guimarães, City One Minutes Film in Shanghai and Gent, Future Places in Porto, AZ Labs in Montemor-o-Novo and Porto, Popup in Lisbon, ACM Multimedia in Florence, TEI in Funchal, SXSW in Austin, CHI in Vancouver, UCLA in Los Angeles, Artropocode in Santiago de Compostela, ISEA in Istanbul and in Sydney, DIS in Newcastle, Balance-Unbalance in Noosa, STTF Sustainable Futures, European Researchers Night in Lisbon, Civic Veillance in Ispra, and PDC in Windhoek.
